Designer J.M. Browning developed a number of revolutionary self-loading weapons during his lifetime. From pistols to automatic rifles to machine guns, his weapons have always stood out for their reliability. Probably the most famous is the Colt 1911 pistol. In the competition of many designs, the weapon established itself as the standard sidearm of the American army and in the trenches of World War I gained recognition for its reliability. In the interwar period, a slight upgrade focused mainly on ergonomics took place, and this version, designated the M1911 A1, became the new standard. It served reliably in World War II, in Korea, in Vietnam, and even though it was officially replaced in 1985, in a number of units it served in the Gulf War. The special forces continued to retain the weapon for its performance. The modernization resulted in the MEU variant for special forces, and in 2012 – after 101 years since its first introduction – the significantly modernized M45A1 variant was accepted into service.
